Ben Harris started his musical journey at the age of fourteen playing with the legendary Preston Love. At the age of eighteen, he moved to Boston and attended Berklee College of Music. He was able to study with the great Jazz Bassist John Neves and Bill Curtis of the Boston Pops. After several years in Boston, Ben moved to New York to begin studying at the Manhattan School of Music.
Ben played numerous Jazz clubs in New York. He studied with Homer Mensch and Lew Norton of the New York Philharmonic. While in New York, Ben taught bass lessons at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. This job lead to Ben’s stint in the Brooklyn Conservatory Jazz Ensemble. While playing with this group, Ben recorded the Bridging the Gap album. This was a straight forward jazz album.
Ben has also performed with a variety of talented artists such as Doc Pitman of the Inkspots, Jazz Organist Jimmy Smith, Sir Charles Hughes of the Drifters, Mike Stern of Miles Davis Band, Ed Cherry of the Dizzy Gillespie Band, Delmar Brown of the Miles Davis and many others. In 2003, Ben recorded his first CD as a band leader called Breakthru. This CD has a sophistafunk jazz flavor.
He has taught at North Central University and currently teaches music in the Phoenix area. Ben continues to play professionally in the Valley as a band leader and with other artists. He is currently working on his next CD which is coming out in the spring. This new CD will be featuring Ben’s tremendous bowing talent in which he will play great jazz love songs.
